Youth Today: The Reality of Rave Party

Drunk teenager lying on the ground at the RAVE in Port Dickson
So for those who don't know a Rave party was organised in Port Dickson (PD) over the Weekend. A rave party usually involves loud trance/techno music being played usually in a very spacious area such as a warehouse or on a field. So the party was held in resorts along Jalan Pantai, PD. Expectantly, this rave party have sparked the anger of the PD community and to put it in words it is a culture shock for many. The complete article covered why The Star can be found here .

The word 'culture shock' is the correct term to describe such party, as rave parties are very rare in Malaysia due the nature of the event. The event usually last for 5 to 10 hours or even longer. It can also be over a few days. People that attend rave parties usually consume large quantities of alcohol and drugs. In Europe rave parties are always the target for drugs dealer to make money. So the rave party in PD was similar drugs and alcohols were consumed openly and interesting the article also highlighted free association of males and females. To be honest I really don't care about the mixing of males and females, as this is very common in the modern days.

Ironically, I was invited by some friends to attend this rave, the people that invited me were locals and some foreigners. But these friends, are friends from overseas and clearly the idea of attending a rave party is very normal. Honestly, I have attended rave parties in the past and found it to be a waste of time and money. What sparked my interest to write Topless Malay at the Rave in PD around 5 AMabout this topic is that, I have never heard of a rave party in Malaysia before. I truly think that we can organize rave parties but with strict controls so the the participants do not indulge in drugs and sexual activities. The thing about alcohol is very hard to regulate as this kinds of event is usually attended by many foreigners. No alcohol means no party for them.

I can't say much about this anymore, because to criticise it would mean lying to myself and all of you, to support this event is also not true. I guess I am on the fence about these kinds of parties.

I have included some pictures from the rave party. Note that pictures were taken from The Star Article "Port Dickson folks irked by youths' out of control behaviour at rave event".

For those who outrightly condemn the last week rave party at PD I think it is unfair. The main contentions are alcohol, drug and even sex. PD's MP critism is an armchair critic as I am quite sure he wasn't at the rave party himself.

I was happened to be there on Friday night; somehow after dinner I got dragged on to join my friends to the place. The weather that night was extremely hot and humid. Few things I noticed include the tight security. There were many policemen along the roads; there were few trucks of FRU. What the heck?

To enter you have to fill in a form, get your IC verified (age limit) and got searched 3 times. You would be required to empty all your pockets, etc...but of course it not a fool proof if anyone still wanted to bring in drugs.

There were many booths selling beers and cigarettes. So what? they sell plenty more in pubs! Drink at your own risk. If alcohol is forbidden in your religion then you shouldn't drink - not so simple, is it? then that's your problem, not rave party problem. If you are parents, then tell your kids not to go to rave party, like when you tell them don't go to pubs, hard rock cafe, etc.

Music were loud at the rave party -that't the idea! and is it the case that one can't tolerate loud party musci? - just for a few hours and once in a life time? I say that's very selfish.

My main appreciation is the lighting system, the happy crowd - it's party like atmosphere..I saw smiles and people raising their hands like in a concert.

People took off their shirts - it was so hot; we were on a beach for god sake! May be that is too sexy for ultra conservative people. There wasn't any completely naked people, are you crazy? I didn't witness too people got too drunk neither. I didn't notice drug addicts - perhaps one need to look harder to notice.

The point is - drug and alcohol are consumed irrespective of a place so why capitalising & criticising such thing on the rave party?? One can find more drunkards and naked people in certain entertainment joints. I see that people are too quick to condemn something as "bad" without looking at the boader picture - as if they are so virtous and better human - what a bunch of hypocrites!

Hi...first of all, this isn't the first rave party in malaysia. it's the first rave party that made it to newspaper. finally.

the big deal, is that this social problem has gone down the hill, and only now it's been realized. a tad too late la kan.

i could share my experience here...and it IS a shock. RAVE events are mainly attended by YOUTHS. they can be as young as in their TEENS and most are in their twenties or thirtees. for the younger ones...of course their parents KNOW BETTER than to let their kids go off. but how many of us LIE to our parents?? you do what you must just so you can do what you want right.

and police checks. hah. you think these police people don't know you're on something? as i said, this isn't the first rave. and come on la. they're just there as procedure. they HAVE to be there. and of course they have to CATCH SOME people at the end of the rave. but truth is, they would have to lock up a lot more people if you really wanted to 'catch' people on drugs.

look...the big deal is this alright. maybe to you it's alright to be young, drinking, drugging, and having fun on the beach...doof doofing to loud music and mixing with other people from different genders. this is the way of life of ppl with no faith/religion. i understand. i was like that. but the deal is, when you really open your eyes...it's all satanic influences man. maksiat orang cakap. pergaulan bebas...girls in bikini...sweat, craze...come on...we're doomed. semangat nak macam orang barat. we're losing our culture. we're losing our roots.

why we condemn is wrong...because we let it in, in the first place. who is to blame???

as the day goes by, malaysia has more clubs and pubs coming out. the more modern we are, the happier. so why culture shock??? we let this happen. we WANT this to happen. so we have to FACE THE CONSEQUENCES.

btw wis...come on. girls in bikinis or short shorts or whatever they are wearing is not NAKED enough to you? lol..i'm not being conservative...but i'm a girl. a few pieces of cloth does not cover me. i know that for a fact.

and you didn't witness drunk people or drug addicts? do you know how an addict looks like? if you THINK you're seeing someone on drugs, do you KNOW what kind of drug they're on??? they could look DRUNK, or maybe they're hyper just because of the music? but seriously...maybe it might surprise you that they're anything BUT sober. and alcohol consumers...some drink 1 can/glass and are gone by the time they take the last drop. some can drink a barrel. some drink and drug. THIS IS THE PROBLEM. it's like it's so cool right. drinking, drugging. no big deal. it comes with the party shit. i am a hypocrite, cause how the eff would i know this right.

but IT IS AN EFFING PROBLEM. i don't even know where to start. everything about partying is crazy. cause everything that comes to make the party happening is crazy. if you wanna bring religion into this...this is all pure satanic. there you go. but it's the modern times? yeah...you're right. it's satan seriously having a thrill in this modern times.

we might as well cheer for them satans and say we're with you and we love you. lets parrrrtayyyy!!!!

come on man, what's this about alcohol and drugs being taken? whether or not a rave happens in your country, people are still going to drink alcohol, do drugs and have sex. please don't make it seem like this only happens in clubs and raves and whatnot.

the loud music was there just for a few hours, bear with it. it's just a few hours and its not going to kill anybody. so relax.

only those are above the age of 18 are allowed to enter the rave.
18 is the age in almost every country where you can drink beer and buy cigarettes. they are considered adults and are legally allowed to do what they want to do, as long as it doesn't break the law and order! as such, its up to the party-goers to drink what they want and wear what they feel like.
c'mon on, no one was naked at the rave. you see skimpily dressed women on tv, so whats wrong with looking at a hot girl on the beach wearing a bikini? snap back to reality my friend!

2 days of freedom brought down a couple of international DJs, world-renowned for their music and showmanship. this is truly a party for the music lovers. i bet you wouldn't understand what that means you seem to be very out of touch with reality, my friend! i was there and i was completely sober and 2 days of freedom 2008 was one of the best raves i've ever attended to in my life. i've been to many raves around the world, from thailand to amsterdam and 2 days of freedom was very well done, from the service queues to the security!

drugs...its illegal, and yet people still choose to do it. that is their own problem. they are aware of the law and that its illegal to do any sort of substance in malaysia. they know what they are getting themselves into SO i suggest thats enuff from you saints!

good day!

Dont be quick to jump the gun and make accusations like free thinking is satanic. Its good that u have ur faith and ur strong beliefs in your religion. Dont push it upon anyone else as to say they are all doomed because of their lack of faith. Each to their own. Dont u think?

Yes i believe the law is the law, and yes young people shouldnt be going to such events, but if u meet the age requirements and it is a legal event, then by all means attend and have fun....with limitations and moderation.

Dont be biased. The social climate has changed and yes we are becoming westernised, but we do know of our culture and are just keeping up with the changes.

Change is the only constant thing in this world and if u do not keep up with the rest of the herd, ur not going to make it big in this world. Scepticism is the enemy of progress.

We should look forward to the future, knowing of our roots and where we came from but adapt to the social climate changes as we progress into a modern day.

If we were all biased and held back by traditions laid before us that were made centuries ago, we wouldnt be where we are today with the tallest building in the world and so on.

Your precious wawasan 2020 will not be met if we did not adapt to the everchangin social climate.

Be open and do not judge anyone just because they have no faith in religion. Many great, humble and good hearted people were not religious.

It is good that u believe strongly in religion, i bid u a great life and im sure it is what that makes u a better person, but do not judge others.

Peace.
